![]() ![]() These rifles did not satisfy the Spanish Army, and so on 2 December 1891, the Army ordered 1,200 Model 1891 Mausers that used new smokeless powder ammunition. These Mauser's are made in the grand old tradition of 19th century gunmaking, such fit and finish would cost you five grand today in a new rifle. Development edit In 1887, the Spanish Army began trials of the Turkish Model 1887 Mauser rifles, which utilized black powder cartridges. ![]() If it looks refinished it probably is, but not by Bubba, the Argentine government refurbished a lot of rifles in order to command a better price when they sold them, they may be the only country ever to do this with an eye to making a profit selling them. Price can range from a low of $280 for one I saw slip under the radar on GB last year, to a more normal $400. Good to reload your own anyway so you can load to the lowest pressure, never push these rifles, they are very old, but very well made by the Germans. They are all made before 1898, no FFL needed to buy one, ammo is loaded by Privi, 7.65 Argentine, but is not cheap, if you want to shoot it a lot plan to reload. My question concerns how the serial number system works and can a year of manufacture be estimated from the serial number. My son also owns a 1891 Mauser by Loewe made for Argentina, Serial Number E6xxx. Yes, I own four of them The ground crest was done by the Argentine government, not Bubba, they did this prior to selling off the rifles in the 1950's and 60's, later imports have the crest intact. I own a 1891 Mauser, manufactured by Loewe of Berlin for Argentina, Serial Number A87xx. ![]()
